Deliveries of mini LED panels increased by 121 percent in 2022

Deliveries of mini-LED panels have increased enormously in the past year, according to Display Supply Chain Consultants, based on their own data and research. According to the display industry analyst firm, there was an increase of 121 percent in 2022.

DSCC reports that a total of 21.6 million miniled panels will be delivered in 2022, while in 2021 still stuck at 9.8 million units. The analysts believe that the number of panels supplied will continue to grow and will reach 24.5 million units in 2023 and will then grow sharply again in 2024 to a delivery number of 30.2 million mini-LED panels. After that, there will be no further substantial growth.

While tablets, televisions and laptops were the three most important product groups in 2021 for the supply of mini-LED panels, laptops are now by far the most important product group for the increase in the deliveries of miniled panels. DSCC expects that from 2026 monitors and televisions in particular will have a larger share. The use of OLED panels seems to be the main cause of the disappearance of mini-LED panels in tablets from 2025.

A mini-LED backlight uses LEDs, just like a traditional full array local dimming backlight which are distributed behind the screen and can be dimmed in zones to improve contrast. Mini LED backlights use much smaller LEDs and also many more LEDs, which can therefore be dimmed in more individual zones. In addition, a higher peak brightness can usually be achieved compared to regular backlights.
