Ubisoft working on Assassin’s Creed game as a live service

Ubisoft is working on a new project that would be codenamed Assassin’s Creed Infinity. According to game journalist Jason Schreier, it would be an Assassin’s Creed game according to the live service model. New, traditional games from the series may not be released anymore.

Assassin's Creed Valhalla

Unlike previous games in the Assassin’s Creed series, Infinity will feature multiple historical eras, with players being given the space to expand into other eras in the months and years after release , Schreider writes on Bloomberg . He bases this on sources that are familiar with the development of the game. It is therefore a massive online platform that gradually develops over time. Individual games on the platform may feel and look different and different, but they will all be interconnected.

On Twitter, Schreier reports that Ubisoft Montreal and Quebec studios have joined forces for Assassin’s Creed Infinity. Traditionally, the two studios alternated for the different games in the series. For example, Montreal was in charge at Valhalla, while Quebec was at the helm of Odyssey. Both teams would now work together, although according to Schreier we are still years away from a release. He says Infinity won’t be released until 2024 at the earliest.

Ubisoft has informed Schreier through a spokesperson that the game does indeed exist, although the publisher did not want to go into details of Infinity. She does say that Ubisoft’s goal is to “exceed the expectations of fans who demand a more cohesive approach.”

Schreier argues that Infinity could also become a hub of sorts, giving players the opportunity to play multiple Assassin’s Creed games. He thinks this project means there will be no more traditional Assassin’s Creed titles coming out between now and the release of Infinity, at most expansions for existing titles and other smaller content.

He substantiates this by pointing to the information that both Quebec and Montreal are working on Infinity, which were the two main studios for the traditional games. This could mean that Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla, released last November, was the last regular game in the series.

The business model of Assassin’s Creed Infinity is also not yet clear. It could become a free-to-play online platform in the vein of Fortnite or GTA Online; those games are regularly updated with new content and changes to keep players entertained for years to come. The live services category brings in a lot of money for game publishers these days and is often the largest source of income. Ubisoft is still lagging behind other major publishers.
