Proximus postpones support for esim smartwatches to 2024

Belgian provider Proximus postpones the release of e-SIM support for smartwatches to next year. This support is already available with other Belgian providers such as Orange and Telenet. Proximus customers have been waiting for this for some time.

At the end of last year the provider wanted to support e-SIM in 2023 sim for smartwatches come. According to a forum moderator from Proximus, this support will not be rolled out until 2024 at the earliest. This would be related to an adjustment of the priorities in Proximus’ e-SIM roadmap. “The compatibility for ‘watch as a second device’ will be gradually developed with a view to commercialization,” said the Proximus employee. The provider has been supporting e-SIM since 2020, but currently only on smartphones. Smartwatches with e-SIM no longer need to be connected to a telephone or WiFi in order to make calls or receive notifications, for example.

At competitor Telenet, it has been possible since the end of 2020 to use the e-SIM from smartwatches. Smartphone and smartwatch share the same number and subscription; that’s how providers in the Netherlands work. It is obvious that Proximus wants to go for the same approach. It is striking that e-SIM via Telenet only works on smartwatches, and not on smartphones, as is the case with Proximus.
